Eating is universal human ritual. But there is very important aspect of eating as it impacts our consciousness,”You are what U eat”. We should discriminate what kind of food we should eat.
We cannot eat anything and everything because you eat like human being, then you can increase your qualities of human being. If you eat like cats and dogs, you increase the quality of cats and dogs.
In Vedic Scriptures it is mentioned jivo jivasya jivanam means one living entity is food for another living entity.then why don’t you eat your own son? He is also jīva. Why do you discriminate? Therefore discrimination is the better part of valor.Similarly, in the human form of life there should be discrimination. It is commonsense can we eat the food of hog ?
Non Vegetarian Food
Eating Non vegetarian is sinful because it involves killing of animals .this is violence means infringement of other’s right to live. It is common sense taking any life is sinful.
Those who kill animals and give them unnecessary pain as people do slaughterhouses—will be killed in the same way in the next life and in many lives to come… In the Judeo-Christian scriptures, it is stated clearly ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ and Srimad Bhagavatam says
He who gives permission, he who kills the animal, he who sells the slaughtered animal, he who cooks the animal, he who administers distribution of the foodstuff, and at last he who eats such cooked animal food are all murderers, and all of them are liable to be punished by the laws of nature. No one can create a living being despite all advancement of material science, and therefore no one has the right to kill a living being by one’s independent whims.
In their next lives, such sinful persons will be eaten by the same creatures they have killed in this world. Because we are maintaining organised slaughter house to kill animals to satiate our tongue prostitution therefore we are entangled in karmic reaction. We have practically seen how the world atmosphere is polluted by unwarranted war in every decade ,where mass of People dies there are unwanted calamities from tsunami to earthquake. There are new diseases that kills in wholesale.
Vegetarians still have to kill plants, and this is also violence but vegetarian foods such as ripe fruits and many vegetables, nuts, grains and milk do not require any killing. But because plants have less evolved consciousness than animals, we can presume that the pain involves is much less than when an animal is slaughtered, there is comparatively less sin involved. It’s just like difference between pickpocket and bank robber. But both are bird of same feather but we do have to eat something So the problem is not how to avoid killing altogether—but how to cause the least suffering to other creatures while meeting the needs of the body
In Bhagavad Gita 17.8 it is stated that Vegetarian food are mode of goodness sattvic and Krishna or God also asks foods for offering from vegetarian kingdom (B.G 9.26 If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.)
Srila Prabhupada says The taking of any life, even that of a plant, is certainly sinful, but Krishna, the supreme controller, frees us from sin by accepting what we offer. Eating food first offered to the Lord is something like a soldier’s killing during wartime. In a war, when the commander orders a man to attack, the obedient soldier who kills the enemy will get a medal.
But if the soldier kills someone on his own, he will be punished. Similarly, when we eat only prasada, we do not commit any sin. This confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita (3.13) “The devotees of the Lord are released from all kind of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, eat only sin.”
So We are neither vegetarian nor Non-vegetarian but Prasadarian
