ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

In the Vedic scriptures, Lord Krishna was prophesied to appear as the Golden Avatara, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, to spread the chanting of the Holy Name of the Lord, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare, and help people attain spiritual perfection by countering the negative influence of this age of quarrel and hypocrisy.

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is considered the most benevolent incarnation, as he freely gave the process for delivering fallen souls from the clutches of Maya without any condition or discrimination. He introduced the Sankirtana Movement, which involves joyfully chanting and dancing the Holy Name of the Lord, without the need for understanding Vedic scripture, undergoing severe austerities, performing expensive fire sacrifices, or complicated temple worship.

By chanting the Holy Name of the Lord, one can immediately transcend the negative influence of this dark age, experience a higher taste, and discard the lower taste that perpetually shackles us in the miserable material prison house.

THE GOLDEN AVATAR

Gaura Purnima marks the revered arrival of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, also known as the Golden Avatara, and is celebrated as one of the most important festivals for Gaudiya Vaishnavas.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, an incarnation of Lord Krishna with the loving mood of Srimati Radharani, appeared on the full moon day in the month of Phalguna in the year 1486 AD at Sridham Mayapura, as the son of Sri Jagannath Mishra and Srimati Sachidevi. His mission was to establish the Sankirtana Movement, the congregational chanting of the Holy Name of the Lord, as the yuga dharma for the age of Kali.
