“Without taking shelter of the feet of the hill that is the best of Lord Hari’s servants and full of love for the divine king and queen, how is it possible to attain pure devotional service? May Govardhana Hill fulfill my desire.”

(Govardhanāṣṭakam, verse 8)

Govardhana Pūjā is the celebration of Kṛṣṇa’s pastime of lifting Govardhana Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana from the terrible storm created by Indra, the King of Heaven. Since Kṛṣṇa is most worshipable, Lord Caitanya recommends the worship of Kṛṣṇa’s dearmost Govardhana Hill. Hare Kṛṣṇa temples across the world celebrate Govardhan Pūjā annually by decorating and worshiping mountains of foodstuff which symbolize Govardhana mountain and circumambulating it.
