Śrī Nṛsiṁha-caturdaśī
Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, the half-lion and half-man incarnation of Kṛṣṇa, appeared on account of His devotee, Prahlāda. The Lord appeared in this most fearsome form of Nṛsiṁhadeva to encourage Prahlāda Mahārāja and kill his atheistic father Hiraṇyakaśipu who was always harassing his devoted son.
tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-śṛńgaḿ
dalita-hiraṇyakaśipu-tanu-bhṛńgam
keśava dhṛta-narahari-rūpa jaya jagadīśa hare
“O Keśava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari, who have assumed the form of half-man, half-lion! All glories to You! Just as one can easily crush a wasp between one’s fingernails, so in the same way the body of the wasp-like demon Hiranyakasipu has been ripped apart by the wonderful pointed nails on Your beautiful lotus hands.”
– (Daśāvatāra-stotra)
Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva appeared on account of His devotee, Prahlāda. Hiraṇyakaśipu, Prahlāda’s father, was so cruel towards his son that he tried to kill him in so many ways. However, by the grace of Kṛṣṇa, he was always saved.
satyaṁ vidhātuṁ nija-bhṛtya-bhāṣitaṁ
vyāptiṁ ca bhūteṣv akhileṣu cātmanaḥ
adṛśyatātyadbhuta-rūpam udvahan
stambhe sabhāyāṁ na mṛgaṁ na mānuṣam
“To prove that the statement of His servant Prahlāda Mahārāja was substantial—in other words, to prove that the Supreme Lord is present everywhere, even within the pillar of an assembly hall—the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, exhibited a wonderful form never before seen. The form was neither that of a man nor that of a lion. Thus the Lord appeared in His wonderful form in the assembly hall.”
– (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.8.17)
Finally, the Lord appeared in this most fearsome half-lion and half-man form of Nṛsiṁhadeva to encourage Prahlāda Mahārāja and kill Hiraṇyakaśipu. As promised in the Bhagavad-gīta, Kṛṣṇa will never fail in giving protection to His devotee.
