Who is Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu?
The golden avatar whose appearance we celebrate
Śrī Gaura Pūrṇimā celebrates the appearance of Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu — Lord Kṛṣṇa and Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī manifesting together in a single golden form. Born in 1486 in Māyāpura, India, He came to teach the path of devotion through congregational chanting (saṅkīrtana). His message is universal: everyone, regardless of background, can experience divine love through the chanting of the holy names.

Caitanya Mahāprabhu was born in the town of Nadia, just after sunset on the evening of the 23rd Phālguna, 1407 Śakābda (February 18, 1486 CE). The moon was eclipsed at the time of His birth, and the people of Nadia were engaged in bathing in the Bhāgīrathī river with joyful chanting.
His father, Jagannātha Miśra, was a learned brāhmaṇa, and His mother, Śacī-devī, was renowned for her exemplary character. The Vedas and Purāṇas foretold His appearance, yet He is also known as the “concealed descent” of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Although He moved amongst human society as a devotee of Kṛṣṇa, great saints recognized Him as the Supreme Lord Himself — appearing not with Kṛṣṇa’s blue complexion, but with a radiant hue of molten gold. He came simply to teach kṛṣṇa-bhakti — love of Kṛṣṇa — showing all living entities the way to approach the Divine.
