Snana–yatra is an important pastime of Lord Jagannath where a special bath of Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra takes place. Lord Jagannath’s pastimes are such that after snana–yatra, Jagannath, Balarama and Subhadra become “sick”, and, so, must take “medicines” and “take rest” until they become “rejuvenated” enough to go for Ratha-yatra.
This sickness is not to be compared with our worldly sickness. By this sickness, the Lord desires to extend His mercy to one and all. So for the following fortnight, Their Lordships will not be seen on the altar of the temple. They come out in grandeur on the Ratha Yatra day where they parade on three gigantic chariots pulled by the devotees.
With Their large merciful eyes, They shower their glance of mercy upon one and all, thus awarding them Mukti, or liberation from the material cycle of birth and death. Come and participate by bathing Lord Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra on this most auspicious day!
