The main ritual in the celebration of Ratha Yatra is the pulling of the chariots to the accompaniment of kirtan. It is stated in Skanda Purana that the sanctity of the festival is such that just touching the chariot or even the ropes with which the chariots are pulled is considered enough to confer abundant auspiciousness and immense blessings to the effect that one’s place in the abode of the Lord is guaranteed.
